Fashion Blogger Bytes

We asked some of our the most fashion-savvy female bloggers break down their favorite [and least favorite] looks for men and this is what they had to say.

Guys, you should probably take notes.

Clean-Cut

I’m a sucker for clean-cut guys. That means properly fitting (clean!) clothing and good grooming. Guys, you can’t go wrong in well-fitting dark jeans or khakis, nice shoes, and a button-down shirt. Feel free to add your own touch with a cardigan, v-neck, or sneakers. Stay away from graphic tees and jeans that cut off circulation to your ankles, and I’ll be happy!

Timeless

My husband would wear his gym shorts, holey pocket tee, and Vans 24/7 if he had his way. I try to steer him towards classics like well-fitting jeans, a basic shirt, and shoes that match — that’s not too much to ask for, right?! I think guys look best in timeless styles — nothing too fussy or trendy. And no girls jeans, Ed Hardy, or copious amounts of jewelry : )

Cool & Casual

Ryan Gosling StyleThe truth is, I’m not attracted to men who are really fashionable, trendy, or worried about their appearance. I prefer when a man doesn’t look like he took more time than me to get ready. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t find sweatpants and Hooters t-shirts attractive, but I don’t mind a pair of jeans and a hoodie. Effortless is sexy.

I like day and evening looks that are casual and approachable, but pulled together enough that you know he has a little hygiene.

Oh, and it doesn’t hurt if you look like Ryan Gosling.

Classics & Colors

mens striped poloThis spring, have fun with colors and prints, especially when mixing a classic striped polo with a pair of plaid shorts.  Colored shorts and shoes are also a fav of mine and very European-looking. If you are uncomfortable with too much color, then add a little POW with just a jolt. Wear a standard blue and white plaid shirt with a bright pink tie. Or pair a white shirt and jeans with orange shoes. The POW makes all the difference.

I also love a classic polo!  But change it up a bit; wear a different brand like Lacoste or Penguin, however you can never go wrong with Polo by Ralph Lauren. You just want something with a unique look.  It shows you put a little extra effort into trying something new with a classic piece.

Wardrobe 101

If you are like me, I’m sure you have heard or even said at least one of these comments:
“The days of wearing a suit are gone.”
“Casual Friday? It’s casual week in our office. No one cares how you dress.”
“Appearances are irrelevant, the only thing that matters are results.”

Not only are all of these statements untrue, but I’m here to tell you that whether it is for work, a wedding, holidays, date night, etc, the way that you dress leaves a lasting impression on those around you.

Dress to Fit Your Body Type

No matter what your body type, proper-fitting clothes are essential to being a well-dressed man. A common mistake made by men is wearing oversized clothing in an effort to bulk up or even slim down visually, and instead of attaining the well dressed look, what you get is a sloppy mess.

When deciding what to buy in the first place, choose body-skimming dress shirts and tees that allow some movement in the fabric. Make sure you check the label on your shirts too, avoiding anything that contains elastic as these garments tend to stick too closely to your body rather than gliding over it. For a similar reason, skinny jeans should also be banished from your closet as they will either make you look malnourished or like you’re wearing leggings — neither of which is attractive on a man.

Colors and patterns

Where color coordination is concerned, wearing all of one or, more specifically, dark colors like black from head to toe will emphasize your body frame. Although this might work for some, this doesn’t work for all. Take advantage of breaking up your outfit when you can with lighter hues here and there such as white, light-gray and pale-blue.There are a few tricks you can use to play up your assets and minimize the things you don’t like about your body. First off, you should know that horizontal stripes make people look larger, which goes completely against that of conventional fashion wisdom. Opt, therefore, for dress shirts, T-shirts, blazers, and suit pants with a vertical stripe pattern. For suits and dress pants, pinstripes are a classic, flattering choice. For patterned shirts, such as plaid or windowpane, midsize patterns are much more flattering than smaller ones.

Building your wardrobe

Steven Gantt

With regards to the particular pieces, men should have hanging in their closet single-button and two-button jackets for smart-casual occasions, while double-breasted blazers are your best friend for dressier events. In terms of outerwear, jackets that cover your rear should feature more heavily in your wardrobe than cropped jackets. Crew necks are a better choice than V-necks, and in cold weather, feel free to add turtlenecks into your winter wardrobe. You can also enjoy the benefits of layering — namely, that you stay warmer but look cooler. Lastly, have fun experimenting with fabrics — heavy tweeds, corduroys and anything with a chunky-knit texture are good examples that look fantastic on a man.

So when you are picking out what to wear, remember, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. In our fast paced society, a book’s cover can be just as important as its content. Of course, appearances are not everything. However, in a competitive world it pays to understand the importance of your clothing. Investing the proper resources into your personal presentation will multiply your ability to succeed.

Accessorizing for a Formal Night

Ties

  • A few types of ties that you can use:
    • »Bowties: For a cute, nerdy look. You can never go wrong with a classic black bowtie, but now more and more patterned bowties are available. You can always wear a colored or patterned bowtie to make a statement (especially if you are only wearing black and white – pop of color), or bring out the color of your formal outfit (match with the color of shoes, or the color of any piece that you are wearing).
    • »Skinny ties: For a clean, minimalist look. Skinny ties can also pair well with nerd glasses. The classic black skinny tie can definitely create a very clean look – not only professional, but also young and fresh. Definitely a good piece to consider if you want to go classic with a little twist.
    • »Neckties: Neckties come in all sorts of colors and patterns and is the go-to accessory for a formal or professional look.

We found this great resource that goes over 15 Ways to Tie a Tie – a must-see before tying up.

Belts

  • One way to create unity in your look with belts is to match the color of the belt with the color of your shoes. Belts finish up a look and are almost necessary in any smart, formal outfit. For a more vintage look, you can go with a darker shade of brown which can be complemented with leather oxfords. Try to avoid huge buckles as that can be too casual and sometimes tacky.

Shoes

  • A few types of shoes that you can wear:
    • »Oxfords: Definitely a favorite choice – they come in many different colors and textures. The newest trend is also punched cap oxfords which add lovely details to your outfit. You can wear a classic outfit with colored, suede oxfords to make a statement.
    • »Loafers: A more casual choice – great for a preppy look and can be super comfortable.

Glasses

  • »Nerd: Nerd glasses can also complete a classic look, if you get the ones that are thick and black rimmed. It does not always create a nerd look, if that’s not the look that you’re going for, but it is a great accessory which goes well with almost anything. They come in different colored rims which can come to your advantage, depending on the outfit that you are wearing. It is preferable to have another accessory or piece in your whole outfit of the same color in order to create more unity to the outfit, and also as not to make your accessory look misplaced. It is also important to create an impression that every piece in your outfit is meant to be there and not just put together at random.
  • »Rimless: Rimless glasses are simple ones that don’t have frames around the lens. These are typically thought of as a classier option to nerd glasses, and they can bring  a seamless feel to your look. Rimless glasses are perfect if you want to draw attention elsewhere, like a great pocket square or colorful tie.

The Adventurous Man

We’ve got a guest blogger today! Kate, from The Brown Umbrella, offers her suggestions on how to convey that “adventurous man” look.

  1. Bright Colors, especially blues and rust, are must if you are looking to make a bold statement this year.  Men who wear this trend exude confidence and style, and it can be done in whatever scale makes you comfortable.  Some looks on the runway were head-to-toe brights, but I don’t know many men who could pull that off in real life, so maybe just incorporate the trend with one piece or even just in an accent accessory like a pocket square or shoelaces.
  2. I am mesmerized by how modern rolled up trousers make suits look, especially when paired with a fitted tee.  If you do not need to wear a suit everyday, you can roll up your chinos or jeans and pair it with a sleek blazer or a chunky knit.  This may be my favorite trend off the spring runways for men because it is sexy in its ability to be dressed up, yet casual.
  3. Boat shoes have gotten an update this season by using prints and unique textures like straw and tweed to the top panel of them.  It is definitely a way to make a special sort of statement, and much more comfortable in the heat of the spring and summer than the other big shoe trend for men, military boots.  I love the idea of pairing these shoes with a button down and shorts.

  4. Another big thing that I love this season is juxtaposition of pieces with innovative cuts and vintage silhouettes.  It is nice because of how much freedom it gives you to personalize each outfit.  The vintage silhouettes can be found in new pieces, or even out of your grandfather’s attic or a thrift store (they are the best places to find one of a kind pieces, but make sure you get the pieces tailored to fit you).  I love a man in a well fitting vintage piece; even vintage accessories are a great option if you are unsure of how the tailoring should be done.
  5. Tribal and Baja prints are so exciting this season because they are being used in unexpected ways.  They are used on shoes, pants, cardigans… everything.  The geometric tribal prints are very masculine and easy to style along with any of your basics.

The Classic Man

  1. For the past few years men’s suits have been getting more and more slim, but that has changed this season and we are starting to see more traditional suit silhouettes.  The wider leg is modern and clean, so when it is paired with a boxy jacket, men look traditional but very fresh.
  2. I believe every man should have a chambray shirt because it can be paired with anything from casual linen pants to brightly colored chinos to white jeans.  It is timeless and very waspy, but if paired with the right accessories it can be novel and almost urban.
  3. Check and Tweed will always be stylish.  You can never go wrong with brown tweed or gray glen plaid, but in order to keep them from looking like your dad’s pieces that are a bit dull, look for updated cuts to your pieces. Also, never underestimate the power of a good tailoring job.
  4. One of the most versatile trends this season, sunbleached neutrals, is great because you probably already have them in your wardrobe (and they are incredibly comfortable).  Since they are a neutral, they can be worn with anything, and even worn together for a spectacularly cozy monochromatic look.
  5. Trench coats will be in style and needed in a man’s wardrobe forever.  You can try a navy trench in you are feeling a little bolder than the traditional khaki.  Double breasted coats and jackets are on trend this season as well, so it is a great way to check off two trends in one.

Ladies Spring Break Style 2012

Spring is one of the prettiest times to be a gal! With all the pastels, bright colors, and floral prints floating around, you can’t help but feel great in spring fashions. Going along with our Men’s 2012 spring looks, here’s what ladies can look forward to this spring.

On Top

Ladies outerwear

To keep warm, layer up with cute cardigans, blazers, and trenches. Bold colors are definitely in, but these pretty pastels are perfect for outerwear. Be sure to make sure your outerwear fits you properly. Just like men’s fashion, tailoring makes all the difference! We’re loving this 60s inspired mint green cardigan with pearl buttons – too cute!

All Over

dresses 2012

Nothing makes you feel prettier like a dress, so bring them out! This is where you can stash your floral prints and fun patterns, like stripes or polka dots. Wear these bare-legged or with some bright tights, and finish the look off with either flats or heels – both look great!

To the Floor

ladies shoes 2012

To compliment the looks above, pastel and neutral colored shoes are the way to go. Oxfords are still in, and they look great with cropped pants and dresses alike. Toms just released their new Ballet Flats line, and we are loving the Alessandra design! Also, don’t forget to play up embellishments. The bows on these Tiffany-blue heels are too precious.

Accessorize

Ladies Accessories 2012

Play up your outfits with some fun accessories this spring! Scarves aren’t just for winter, you can wear them year round! Opt for lighter fabrics like silk and linen, and don’t be scared of fun prints! Fedoras are also making a comeback for females, and the Panama style, shown above, is a great starter hat. Funky jewelry is a great addition, and so are some bright orange nails! A punchy orange is the official Pantone color of 2012, so expect to see it everywhere. Finish the look with a bold handbag. We’re loving cross-body bags, especially in this cobalt blue color.

Men’s Spring Break Style

Even if you don’t get a spring break (some of us have to work…), you can still dress the part. These breezy, preppy looks are perfect for barbecues, a quick hike with your dog, or brunch with your girl on the patio.

Up Top

sweaters and jackets

It’s not summer yet, so you’ll probably need something to keep you warm. Blazers are a classic go-to, and they’re all over this spring’s Banana Republic Mad Men line. If you don’t have a blazer, or want something different, opt for a chunky sweater. They’ll keep you warm, they’re easy to take off if you get too hot, and girls love cuddling with these.

In the Middle

shorts

Bright pops of color are in for both guys and gals this spring. Mix it up a little by wearing color in your shorts. You can wear an equally bold color up top, or you can keep it neutral and let the color of your shorts do the talking. Belt them or not, it’s up to you, just don’t let them sag.

On the Bottom

men's shoes

Going along with the preppy trend we’ve got here, you can add to this look with some loafters or plain canvas shoes. To do a good thing, and wear some of the most comfortable shoes out there, grab a pair of Toms. Sandals work, too, just make sure your feet are prepared. You’re never too manly for a pedicure, and girls hate looking at gross guy feet. It’s worth it.

Something Extra

fedoras

Fedoras are coming back big time, probably thanks to Mad Men, but also because they’re impeccably stylish. Men have been wearing hats and fedoras for over a century, and they’re back. They key to looking great in one is to pick a style that’s flattering to your head and face shape, and making sure it fits. Hat sizing charts can easily determine this for you to make sure you don’t become a “fedora fail.”
